Turbine maker creates 50 Glasgow green manufacturing jobs

26/11/2010
A Danish small turbine manufacturer is going to create 50 green manufacturing jobs in Glasgow with a new £5 million factory.

Gaia-Wind has announce they are to create the new plant in Port Dundas, where they will undertake the assembly, testing and distribution of up to 250 turbines in 2011, increasing the annual capacity to 2,000 in the following years.

The company’s Glasgow-based managing director, Johnnie Andringa, said the turbines are designed to be small power generators for farms and small businesses and have been tailored specifically to suit the moderate wind speeds found around Scotland.

“It will be the global hub for a rapidly growing business with complete integration of all aspects of the process from R&D, design engineering, production and testing, as well as global distribution and supply chain management,” he said.

Gaia-Wind currently has 20 employees at a research and development operation at Hillington Park Innovation Centre and already has 150 installations under its belt in Denmark, the UK and US.

Mr Andringa said they had looked at a number of locations for the factory - including Denmark and Italy - but said they wanted to “concentrate growth around a single location within the company’s core UK market.” Many of the products assembled in Glasgow will be exported overseas.
