L'Oréal wins European lean manufacturing recognition

01/12/2010
Global cosmetics leader, L’Oréal, has scooped two awards for its supply chain management and manufacturing systems at the 6th Annual European Manufacturing Strategies Summit.

The French-based global conglomerate earned the Strategic Manufacturing Award as well as the Operational Excellence Award, following a series of amendments and software projects to enhance their lean manufacturing, Six Sigma and other continuous improvement programmes.

The awards were held last month in the German city of Düsseldorf.

Software solutions provider Apriso, which worked with L’Oréal on the installation and establishment of the new programmes, said the company had set itself a number of lofty goals, including improving agility, reducing costs, cutting waste, increasing operational performance and improving IT efficiency on a global scale.

L’Oréal's chief information officer, Jacques Playe, said the work they had done had been instrumental in developing a sustained cultural change, through the delivery of expanded visibility to operational intelligence.

"This has helped us to improve our Group overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) from 50 to 60 percent – a 10 point improvement – across 20 plants in just two and a half years," he said. "We are now targeting an OEE performance threshold of 70 per cent for all plants in less than two years."
